Overview

The Energy Engineer is responsible for technical support in our commercial and industrial programs.  The engineer will work with program teams and facility owners to identify opportunities to save energy. The engineer is a technical lead and provides technical guidance to program staff, trade allies (contractors), facility owners, and less experienced engineers.

Responsibilities

  • Field engineering work
    • Identifies, leads, and qualifies custom/M&V projects in our programs (beyond deemed savings) and writes IPMVP-compliant plans and reports
    • Oversees the deployment and analysis of data loggers in the field and the analysis of billing data (and flow meter data - gas)
    • Originates and produces complex engineering work that requires little oversight or revision from senior engineers (i.e., senior engineers have confidence in your energy engineering abilities)
  • Non-field engineering work
    • Responsible for standard project savings integrity (elec – lighting, HVAC, AC tune-ups; gas – boilers, furnaces, water heaters)
    • Reviews filings, utility commission documents, and evaluator documents for technical accuracy and sound engineering practices
    • Writes work papers for new energy efficiency measures with little-to-no edits from senior engineers
  • Business Acumen
    • Uses judgment to self-prioritize significant assignments and identifies and communicates issues before they become problems
    • Identifies and delivers on opportunities to improve our technical work products and processes
    • Regularly supports other engineers and program staff by volunteering services and consistently receiving requests outside the typical day-to-day work
    • Highly productive team member in any group; functions well when working in interdisciplinary teams, including non-technical staff
    • Effectively train less experienced engineers on area subject matter expertise
    • Works independently with little-to-no oversight
    • Completes significant projects on time and within budget
    • Has strong presentation skills

Qualifications

  • BS Engineering (mechanical and architectural engineering preferred)
  • Experience level – more than four years of applicable professional experience
  • Able to lead IPMVP-compliant M&V audits at commercial and industrial facilities
  • Leverages technical skills to improve technical work in programs (beyond processing of work)
  • Expert in data logger analysis
  • Supports ASHRAE level 2 audits
  • Uses standard engineering principles in our programs (e.g., physics, mechanics, fan laws, thermodynamics, algebra, trigonometry, statistics)
  • Able to develop measure characterizations for new programs
  • Able to work in therms, decatherms, and BTUs
  • Retains at least one professional certification (CEM, CMVP, CLEP, PE, etc.)
  • An established subject matter expert (SME) in a technical area
